2007-8 FIRST Robotics Season Opens in Sharon

The 2006-7 FIRST Robotics season saw many achievements and a lot of great competition for the teams of the Sharon Youth Robotics Association (SYRA).  Highlights included the First Annual Sharon FLL Invitational competition, team victories at the Eastern MA State FLL Championship, the MA State FVC Championship and the CT State FVC Championship, as well as strong finishes at the World Championships.  Sharon has a widely recognized FIRST robotics program, and the SYRA invites students from 4th-12th grades to join in on the fun for the 2007-8 season!

Thanks to the gracious hospitality of the Sharon Girl Scout council, the SYRA new team formation meetings will be held at the Girl Scout House (at 11 Station Street) at 6:00 pm on Tuesday, September 11th and Tuesday, September 18th.  Preparations will be focused on the new robotic challenge releases, as well as demonstrations and new team orientation.

The FIRST LEGO League (FLL) teams, for students in grades 4-8, will be designing and competing with robots that address the theme of personal energy choices – The Power Puzzle.  It is expected that more than 8000 international teams will choose to meet this challenge in 2007!  Robots built from LEGO Mindstorms robotics kits will be programmed to perform tasks on a 4’x8’ field, to maximize their score in a 2.5 minute run.  Local and regional competitions will allow the teams to energize the spectators with their creative solutions to the Power Puzzle challenge.

The SYRA has weekly meetings throughout the season to orient and mentor the teams to help them prepare, and in-house competitions to determine tournament representatives.  The new Mindstorms NXT robot kits are an especially exciting development that we will cover in our meetings.  “Alumni” FLL coaches and team members will provide experienced guidance.

The FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) is a new robotics competition, for students in grades 9-12.  Sharon has been involved from the beginning of this program, with multiple SYRA teams competing in the pilot seasons.  This season the FTC competition will continue to expand, and the SYRA will sponsor teams to meet the new challenge!

Further information can be found at the SYRA website - http://www.syraweb.org/.  From there, links to FIRST robotics content as well as information on Sharon and regional robotics activities and competitions can be found, with lots of photos.

The FIRST (“For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology”) program aspires “to create a world where science and technology are celebrated . . . where young people dream of becoming science and technology heroes”, according to founder Dean Kamen, a prominent inventor and technologist.  The organization is based in New Hampshire, and sponsors robotics competitions all over the world.
